My Epilepsy journey...
In April 2021, I had my first seizure which came as a complete shock to not only myself, but also my family and friends. As something we had never experienced before, we were unsure about what to expect. We were told by doctors that because my seizure was the first one I had ever had, that it most likely wasn’t going to happen again and it could just be a onetime thing. About a week later, I had another seizure and again found myself trying to figure out what had caused this. After a few more seizures that month I was prescribed medication to stop the seizures. The medication worked for a few weeks, but we were disappointed when I had another seizure. I was referred to have an EEG to see if they could see anything abnormal in my brain. We were then referred to a neurologist who requested me to have an MRI and again they found nothing abnormal. He prescribed me a new medication that was a more specified type to target night-time seizures (which I was having). Thankfully, this medication has worked for me, and I have now been seizure free for over 6 months. Before I was diagnosed with Epilepsy, I had no idea what it was or how many people are sadly diagnosed with it each week. Whilst my story has a good outcome, for many other people it doesn’t and some struggle to find the real reason for their seizures. I not only want to raise funds to help those who are struggling to live their day-to-day life but to also raise awareness about Epilepsy and how people can help. Epilepsy didn’t only join my family last year, but my best friends as well, with her brother being diagnosed with a rare brain condition known as “Polymicrogyria”. Together we are raising funds for Epilepsy Queensland and raising awareness on something close to our hearts.
