Our Epilepsy Experiences...
In April 2021, Kiara had
her first seizure which came as a complete shock to everyone. She was put onto
medication that would hopefully control the seizures and her life would go back
to normal. However, the medication didn’t work. A little later, she was
prescribed with a medication that targeted seizures during sleep. Since the new
medication has been prescribed, the seizures have stopped and she has continued
to enjoy activities with family and friends. She has now been 6 months seizure free.
At the end of December 2021, Taylah’s younger brother Hamish began to have
seizures. They had no physical symptoms, but after four seizures, he was
airlifted to hospital, and after a CT scan that showed a mass on the side of
his brain, he was again airlifted to Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.
After a more detailed MRI scan in Brisbane, they diagnosed Hamish with a rare
brain condition known as Polymicrogyria. The family was told that the condition
was something that he’d had since birth and as a result of puberty was coming out
now. He has thankfully been put on a medication that has stopped any seizures
from occurring. Although both scenarios have had a good ending, it doesn’t happen
like that for all people who are diagnosed with Epilepsy. Taylah and I are teaming
up this March to raise awareness on this condition and to also raise funds to help
families and children who face similar circumstances, to get through it and get
the help they need. If you have the time please feel free to share this with
