Epilepsy is more than just seizures

Experiences of epilepsy are as diverse as the people impacted. With the right support – at home, at work and in your community - and the right treatment, it’s possible to thrive. Where epilepsy is medication resistant or where the cost of seizure freedom is having to live with devastating medication side-effects, life can be incredibly challenging. Common experiences include social isolation, loss of employment, loss of independence, and the pervasive fear of when and where the next seizure might strike and what it's consequences might be. Because every seizure takes a piece of you; from executive function impacts, through to learning capacity and working memory, this diagnosis can truly turn a life upside down.

Not only that, but for 300 people each year, it results in loss of life through SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy) as well as being a contributing factor in a further 800+ deaths.

More than just seizures, epilepsy can and does strike at any time of life – every demographic, every race, every gender, every age. But despite being one of the most common neurological conditions affecting humanity today, it remains widely misunderstood and massively underfunded.

Epilepsy Queensland provides tailored support and education to those impacted by epilepsy that bridges the gap between clinical care and everyday life, building knowledge, capacity, and confidence individuals and commmunities need to manage epilepsy, reduce sitiigma and foster inclusion.
