I'm fundraising for...Epilepsy awareness
Thursday 26th NovI've created this page because I want to make a difference. I'm inspired by the work of Epilepsy Queensland Inc and wanted to support them by raising money. . at experiencing first seizure at the age of 25 in April, 2002. recalls watching TV when my face began to twitch. became very upset and walked in circles, not understanding what was happening at the time. After trying to contact a family member to no avail, managed to get a taxi to the local Emergency Department. Unfortunately, there was no diagnosis or treatment made and was sent home.
Three months later in a café, had a second seizure. remembered being about to have lunch, then suddenly not being able to talk.
“Next thing I was removed from my chair and placed on floor by café workers. I remember waking up to café customers staring at me. An ambulance was called and I was taken to the closet emergency department and observed. After following up with my local GP, I was sent for CT scans, where nothing was found.”
was finally referred to a neurologist in 2004 at her request. Her EEG results were normal, but after an MRI, finally had some answers. The MRI revealed had scarring on the right frontal lobe of her brain, due to a childhood stroke had experienced at age 5 years.
: “Although there are never any changes in my MRI scans, check-ups keep my mind at ease. If it wasn’t for the initial MRI scan, I would not know the cause of my seizures. My neurologist doesn’t have an answer to why the seizures came later in life.”
lately my seizures have been occurring continuously. experiences focal seizures that last no longer than 2 minutes and begin whilst she is asleep. e is aware of them starting and experiences tingling on the right side of her face, then twitching and jerking goes to her left side.
my memory is affected after a seizure. have been on several medications over years - some of which have helped for short period of times whilst others didn’t at all. am hopeful that one day will find a medication to control her seizures, with minimal side effects.
“I’m always mindful that a seizure can occur at any time. When first diagnosed, my first thought was “why me?” but then came to realise that I’m not the only one who has epilepsy. There were times after was diagnosed that I had enough and wanted to give up and felt like I couldn’t cope. After feeling that way, having friends and family who helped me. Having met many online epilepsy friends through Facebook support groups. am able to reach out and chat with others in similar situations and with similar struggles ”
